The “Yet to Be” United States of America – Tea Party vs. The NAACP

There are moments in life, where an unexpected chain of events can have a lasting impact. A simple conversation or statement can become much more than the speaker intended it to be. Such was the case this past summer for Shirley Sherrod – an official within the US Dept. of Agriculture. Her words became part of a battle that erupted this past summer between leaders of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and leaders of the Tea Party Movement. Mrs. Sherrod had given a speech back in March at an event for the Georgia NAACP. Four months later, a 2 minute excerpt from her 45 minute speech became an incendiary in the conflagration that emerged from this tea Party vs. NAACP battle. This battle started when the NAACP accused the Tea Party of racism and passed a resolution at their national convention calling on the Tea Party to expel racist factions from their movement and take responsibility for racists actions of their members. In response to this accusation, the Tea Party Express (a branch of the Tea Party) posted a mock letter on his website from the NAACP to Abraham Lincoln. The letter was quoted as saying: “Freedom means having to work for real, think for ourselves, and take consequences along with the rewards. That is just far too much to ask of us Colored People and we demand that it stop!"
Then, a 2-1/2 minute video excerpt was posted by Andrew Breitbart. In the video, Shirley Sherrod, while speaking to the Georgia NAACP, recounted an incident 24 years earlier in which she (prior to working for the USDA), failed to do all she could for a white farmer. Once this video surfaced, Mrs. Sherrod was immediately fired from her post (she was forced to resign by sending an email from her Blackberry (while on the highway). Subsequently, in addition to the criticism she received from Tea Party members, Mrs. Sherrod was also condemned by NAACP leadership.
The irony is that her story was about reconciliation. She was sharing how she had overcome past prejudices. Mrs. Sherrod stated that she realized it wasn’t about “black vs. white”, but rather about economics (poor vs. affluent). She was sharing a story about her transformation. I am not writing this to critique Mrs. Sherrod’s comments or presuppositions. I simply would like to point out the irony that two entities (NAACP & Tea Party) that are diametrically opposed to each other and in conflict, found one place of common group. They both used Mrs. Sherrod’s situation for a political platform. The white farmer who Mrs. Sherrod referred to became a friend of Mrs. Sherrod and was deeply appreciative of the assistance she provided.
As an African American, I have a great deal of respect for the NAACP and its history as a champion for equality in our nation. However, this situation proves that there are those in our nation who find it easier (and more beneficial from the standpoint of media coverage) to highlight potentially prejudiced remarks, rather than a story of reconciliation. Mrs. Sherrod was later offered another job with the USDA, which she declined.
